From the strategies of Arafat and Sharon of the last months it is obvious none of them knew what was coming on 9-11. Basically, Arafat is trapped in the same situation as 10 years ago when he bet, his and his people future, on Saddam Hussein promises, before the war started. How short eyed from such a man ! He lost everything, including huge funding from the Saudis, and was driven to Oslo or obliteration. Now he is in the same situation. Contrary to the article, I doubt we'll see suicide bombing in Israel in the near future. Even the Jihad can't afford the world reaction (now, there wasn't any before, strange) that will follow, or the Israeli retaliation, and subsequent world non reaction, (now again, but not strange). So they'll have to find a way to extricate themselves from the deadlock. The beginning of the talks is a matter of days, if not hours, ( unless a heavy attack )the conclusion a matter of months, also depending on the unfolding of the war(s) to come. So they'll argue about blocs here and there, some return status for refugees and son on, but they are both on a parallel course to the finish line, with a "no choice" motto, a non smiling Powell twisting their arms till they shake hands on the appropriate green lane with very meriting people. Think about it : the next elections being so far away, the war so consuming, (mind consuming only, if the bad guys have no plan B already in place, which we doubt) that the Israelis have lost something too in theses circumstances : the US jewish lobby. So the Jihad, the Hamas and the Jewish lobby have lost their influence. Fine. And if the war(s) is harsher or longer or not, it will not change the basics of that local equation, IMO. Epstein bd
