TSMC doesn’t see IC recovery before 2Q02. In a “Commercial Times” interview, Morris Chang, chairman of TSMC (2330 TT), expressed his belief that real recovery in the semiconductor industry won’t take place before 2Q02, a two-quarter delay due to the terrorist attacks. He also opined that communication shares stand to benefit from the terror attacks as customers will chose the safety of telecommunications over face to face meetings involving air travel. Contrary to earlier reports, TSMC, will not buy back treasury stocks. TSMC reported operating profits of NT$1.4bn in 3Q01, up 400% qoq and better than expected. We estimate TSMC can report pretax profits of NT$200mn in 3Q01 and net profits of NT$1.0bn, for 3Q01 EPS of NT$0.06.
