OT Tim, RE: "You and Mary...Some kind of chick thing"

Your comment is self-alienating.

Also, the very thing you complained was said to you, was actually said to you by a different poster whose sex is opposite of mine and Mary's. Yet, in your post, you are targeting one gender.

Any particular reason why you target one gender?

Amy J

Tim,

re: The 1000 or so sleeper agents are likely to launch a different form of attack for Round Two. What form this take is anyone's guess. But it looks likely that the sleepers are not going to just roll over and go back to sleep. They may be waiting to attack until after the U.S. hits Afghanistan, they may be waiting for Yom Kippur, they may understand the psychological value of waiting, and waiting.

On what do you base this supposition? The "1000 or so sleeper agents", are they the invention of your imagination, or do you have some unique information? That you call them "sleeper" implies that no one knows about them, except you. There have been two international events of terrorism on US soil in the last 10 years. Enforcement and awareness of terrorism is at an all time high, any suspicious activity is reported, you can't get on a plane with a tooth pick, we are as safe from a terrorist attack right now as we every have been. If there are any terrorist cells in this country that haven't been compromised, then they are the ones that are hunkering down.

re: Is the average American at risk? Actuarially, no, of course not. I don't personally fear being killed in such an attack..the odds are slight for any particular person, even airline pilots and stewardesses. But the _effects_ of a successful Round Two, whether biological or dams being blown or whatever, would be enormous: more paralysis, another 2000 point drop on the Dow, and so on. These are the effects to worry about.

You admit that the average American isn't at risk, yet you recommend that they hide out from your "1000 sleeper terrorists". You are right that the economy and the markets are at great risk, probably much greater than you realize. Yet you encourage irrational fear, and the exact hysterical reactions that were the terrorists goals, and that will effect the economy and markets.

Rationality is the cure for our economic problems. You are the real victim of the terrorists, their real target. Their weapon was the people they killed in the WTC. They were not trying to punish those people, they were trying to terrorize the rest of us. That's what terrorism is all about. Fear of being killed, fear that freezes economic activity, one event creating an empathic over-reaction that destroys rationality.

They beat you Tim, I thought only "chicks" were cowards. Fortunately, I think most of us have the courage to get American commerce moving again.

John

Tim,
<<<You know nothing about my psychological state>>>
<<<The 1000 or so sleeper agents are likely to launch a different form of attack for Round Two. >>>
<<<But the _effects_ of a successful Round Two, whether biological or dams being blown or whatever, would be enormous: more paralysis, another 2000 point drop on the Dow, and so on.>>>
<<<She said this may be one of the new hot areas in the economy: buy a gun instead of buying Junior his third or fourth videogame console>>>

BTW, was that an actual QUOTE about Junior, or did you make that up?

Your ability to jump to conclusions is making, Dan, Pete, and Ali seem like sweethearts. Only this is a much more serious subject and deserves far more thought.

I believe, as you do, that it is dangerous not to look at reality and facing it square on. Not facing up to reality will be dangerous. Let's look at reality. Let's look at the strengths of the terrorists and compare their capabilities against the capabilities of their opposition - or people that they hate. I am not suggesting that the terrorists can not do a great deal of harm and inflict tremendous evil, but let's examine the cards they hold.

They learned how to sign up for Hotmail (or something like it), they learned to use Travelocity to book their travel, they used the Internet to coordinate their activities, they used the communications financial infrastructure to receive money to finance their activities, and they receive rudimentary flight training from our educational infrastructure, they were able to keep fit in a health club owned by a small business owner, and they were able to recruit a small number of people willing to committ suicide.

Lined up against them are the people that created and built the Internet, financial institutions, transportation infrastructure, educational establishment, and small business entrepreneurs.

Take a look at what it took for them to destroy what they destroyed. And, also take a look what it took to build what they destroyed. What did it take to create the vision of the World Trade Center? What did it take to generate the financing? What did it take to design and construct the World Trade Center? What did it take to create the 50,000 jobs that housed the WTC? and, what did it take to assemble the thousands of firefighters and emergency rescue workers willing to risk their lives to save the lives of others?

I think you overestimate the power of evil and grossly underestimate the power of good.

Mary
