Didn't see the later messages before my last response. It appears that the Norton firewall turned off certain UDP/TCP ports. This could also be the reason why you cannot network the two computers as it is probably blocking the file and printer sharing ports as well "to protect you from the outside world".

The Linksys router uses NAT to provide you with networking on your local end and access to the outside world. That in itself will provide basic firewall protection but would not be as comprehensive as the Norton software. It is however suitable for most purposes. Check the "Shields UP" section at www.grc.com for some info on how to protect yourself from outside invasion. Not the last word on the subject, but it helps.
