That's interesting.

I don't quite get the parallels to the Loral-Hughes-China scandal. Is the brother of bin Laden a terrorist or terrorist sympathizer? If not, he can't help who his brother is.

Iridium satellites pass the signals from satellite to satellite. To communicate from sat phone to sat phone, no gateway is needed. To communicate with land lines, in theory, only one gateway is needed. The Department of Defense owns its own gateway, and the signals are encrypted.

Based on what I've read on Lloyd Wood's web site, that's different from Globalstar, but Mq can comment on Globalstar.

BTW, according to someone I know who used to specialize in encryption for the CIA, the RSA algorithm has a "hole" in it, which allows those who know the "hole" to decrypt encrypted communications. Of course, anything which is encrypted can be decrypted given enough time and/or a powerful enough computer.
