Milwaukee Journal Sentinel views: Packers vs. Redskins

September 23, 2001

McGINN:

It will take Marty Schottenheimer until midseason to whip his ragtag outfit into a competitive, functional unit. They say timing is everything regarding schedules in the NFL, and it couldn't be better for the Packers. Green Bay has the personnel to exploit Washington's vulnerabilities in the middle of both lines, at middle linebacker and at safety, and win going away.

SILVERSTEIN:

The Packers' objective tonight should be to make Jeff George think about where he is going with the ball. It doesn't necessarily mean they have to blitz him, but give him enough different looks that he has to hold the ball. The defense will be counted on heavily in this game because the offense is going to find it much tougher going than in Week 1.

HOFMANN:

When the ceremonies are over and the distractions are evened out, it comes down to football, and the Packers have a better team than the Redskins in most of the ways that count. They may not be as good as they looked against Detroit, and Washington can't be as bad as it played at San Diego, but the gap is wide enough to make this a relatively easy night.

CHRISTL:

The Packers should win but not as easily as they did in the opener. The Redskins have a handful of talented young players, plus their longtime veterans probably will crank it up for a Monday night game. Jeff George has the arm to be more dangerous than Charlie Batch, but he's also a disaster waiting to happen.

CUNNINGHAM:

It's doubtful the Packers will play as well or the Redskins as awful as they did in Week 1. This one plays more to form, which says the Packers prevail in a game that will be closer than many expect.
