I have been decrying the evils of the "spectrum-auction" (read: spectrum TAX) for a long time. What went wrong was not deregulation; the government should have handed out the proceeds from the auctions to the losing bidders; pocketing the proceeds amounted to a direct tarrif on the whole industry. Apparently the wisemen of today are not even as astute as the US government of 19th century, when Uncle Sam handed out large tracts of land out west for peanuts as a pro-growth stimulus. The railroad industry(and consequently steel and banking industries) in the US would never have prospered if the government tried to auction land at the highest price the market could bear.
