We think that the steep decline in the indexes was not the result of selling, but of market makers and specialists opening for business by offering to buy stocks only at sharply-reduced prices.

Among young recruits - many of whom joined the military out of curiosity, boredom and financial need - tensions run high over who will be called to fight a war that President Bush vows will be long and unlike any before it.

"You can see it in their faces," said Col. Tom Hayden, commander of Fort Benning's Infantry Training Brigade.

Maj Gary Kolb, spokesman for US Army Special Operations Command, acknowledged that orders were received on Thursday for special operations soldiers to deploy overseas.

But Major Kolb declined to say how many troops would be involved, where they would be deployed, or when they would leave.
