Yeah, but can you make it illegal? Drugs (cocaine, heroin, speed, etc)? Prohibition in the '20s?
I think education and anti-advertising is a better route. Otherwise we just make a bunch of dealers rich again.

Smithee,

I have never smoked a cigarette in my life. When I was in high school, my father had cancer surgery. He had actually been first diagnosed with cancer when I was in 6th grade, but I never knew it until years later. As a matter of fact my mother and I were just discussing it tonight. He had 9 surgeries over the 17 years he battled cancer, and several rounds of radiation treatments. September 25 is the 22 year anniversary of my dad's most difficult surgery. As I recall it was 17 hours from the time they took him in the morning until we were able to see him again, and even then he was still in the recovery unit.
(Mom and I talked about it less than an hour ago. She remembers the day so vividly as not only was it the longest surgery, but it was also her birthday.)
The point I started out making was, that when I found out my dad had cancer, which I did not handle well at all. I secretly made a promise to him, that if he would not quit smoking, I would NEVER start. That was a very difficult promise to live up to in my high school years, when almost everyone I knew was smoking. I didn't tell anyone why I wouldn't smoke, I just resolved that I would not ever even try it.
