>>Is it sound economic policy? Maybe not. But it isn't being done for purely economic reasons. It is being done to achieve victory in the most symbolic conflict we have yet seen. Against that backdrop, is it wrong?<<

Is it wrong? Probably not - at least not from our standpoint.

Those words - most symbolic conflict - is what this really boils down to. (not to be too simplistic about it)

Our way of life interferes with their way of life. Our symbols of that way of life are what affronts them. The more our culture - pop culture in particular - encroaches upon theirs, the more control they lose over their populations - particularly the youth.

Interesting to see the street scenes in Pakistan where people were protesting against us and in the background were MacDonalds and Mickey Mouse.

This will take years to change the attitudes in those countries. We've been trying to do that in North Korea for over 50 years now.

This probably belongs on the political rant thread now. It started out as a comment on the economy and quickly morphed over.
