c2,

<< It's overkill for operators who decide to use less than four modes. I suspect that there will be a few of those. >>

Did you happen to catch this one from Tim Luke of Lehman Brothers on September 11?

>> While Wireless Infrastructure Market Anticipated To Trend Flat To Down 10%, Believe Nokia May Continue To Gain Share As Accounts Including AWE & J-Phone Gain Momentum; Possible Deal with Cingular Looms: With a GSM migration contract with AT&T Wireless in hand, and one with Cingular looming, we believe that Nokia is gaining share in the infrastructure market. <<

U-L-T-R-A-S-I-T-E!

<< HSCSD, GPRS, EDGE, and WCDMA. Five if you include GSM. >>

Good answers from Ilmarinen.

GSM Phase 2. GSM = voice and circuit switched data. In Nokia's GSM Phase 2+, GSM = voice and packet data and circuit switched data and high speed circuit switched data.

<< It's overkill for operators who decide to use less than four modes. I suspect that there will be a few of those. >>

Lots of those. Not necessarily all at once. Safeguard against obsolescence.

GSM/GPRS today, GSM/EDGE or GSM/WCDMA (or both) tomorrow. The Americas, EMEA, Europe, Asia and the Pacific Rim. Did I leave out someplace? Antarctica?
