I know they are not space based, my point was that they would be much more effective if they were.

I remember over the past 10 years several proposals for space based laser weapons (in the star wars days, and some time after that), including XRay lasers (single use only space based nuclear based (dead end in my opinion)), kinetic energy weapons - rail guns (as I have not heard of any deployed land based designs, I would think space based ones are even further away), proton beams. These are the ones that come to mind.

The question becomes - can a space based laser be made functional without a nuclear power source - even if it means allowing hours between recharges
