And those were the "good guys" in the North.

The interviews with the Taliban prisoners were a real eye-opener. Something along the lines of:

Q: So you consider it proper to blow up buses with schoolkids in them?

A: If that is what the religious leaders say, yes.

There is only one way to deal with people who think that way, and it sure as hell does not involve reasoning.
