SK consider having TD-SCDMA to 3G standard date: September 24, 2001 The Korean government announced over the weekend that it is consider TD-SCDMA (Time Division Synchronous CDMA) as a 3G mobile phone standard. The Ministry of Information & Communications said it is now planning to relieve heavy reliance on U.S. Qualcomm, which holds patent right of CDMA technology. According to ministry officials, TD-SCDMA is a method introduced by China to ITU. The Korean ministry is expected to establish a state-run joint institute in early December in partnership with the Chinese government, which will develop the related chip and technology. The Korean government also announced plans to seek partnership from both Samsung Electronics and Germany's Siemens, who already began developing the TD-SDMA technology. TD-SCDMA is one of the three choices for Chinese mobile carriers in the 3G era. TD-SCDMA makes better use of the limited available spectrum frequency than the other standards, but the other two standards are regarded by many industry insiders as more likely to capture a larger market share than the locally invented TD-SCDMA.
