AMD'S Scorching Duals
Another rising star on the 3D animation scene is AMD's Athlon MP processor. The dual-Athlon configuration is an excellent candidate for computation-intensive jobs such as animation frame rendering. Equipped with dual 1.2-GHz Athlon processors, AMD's 760-MP chipset provides up to 2.1 GB per second of bus bandwidth per CPU. The 760 MP's AGP 4X graphics are optimized for NVIDIA, FireGL, 3Dlabs, and Matrox cards, and it can address up to 4 GB of memory. I saw it working with 3D Max and Softimage XSI with impressive results.

The 760-MP board design incorporates extremely efficient cache management and provides high-speed bus communications between the two processors. Canopus Corporation has incorporated dual 1.2 Athlons into its StormRack, a turnkey editing system based on its real-time DVStorm editing board. The DVStorm employs a highly CPU-centric design that maximizes the dual Athlons' rendering capability to generate multiple streams of DV in real time. Canopus techs told me they've managed to push this to five simultaneous streams in their lab, which is remarkable if true.

Recently published Viewperf 3D performance tests indicate that the new 1.4-GHz Athlon chips run neck and neck with Intel's 2-GHz Xeons. At around $250 in quantities of 1000, the Athlon solution is compelling. AMD gave Byte.com Contributing Editor Alex Pournelle and me a nondisclosure preview of what they've got coming down the pike later in the year, and while we can't comment on it publicly yet, let's just say that there's no moss growing under AMD's feet.

Dan,

re:"Ur nuts. There's nowhere to plug in a monitor on that "$25 chipset."

That "$25 chipset" is useless without a $50 video card. "

You have been BSing here about the killer Nvidia chipset.

The facts are that this chipset family is aimed at POWER users.

These guys want ultimate in performance.

A middle of the road integrated graphics wont cut it.

For the value market this chipset is a non starter due to its expense.

But market analysis has never been a strong point for you has it.

regards,

Kash
