doug, thanks. i set my linux firewall to medium during install. not sure what that means. i momentarily had the name of the linux box and a few win95 folders set to share show up in my network neighborhood but i made the mistake of leaving the room. when i came back, poof, they were gone (both win95 and linux shared folders). my victory dance was a bit premature ;-) i'm not sure if the name was picked up from a win setting or the actual linux box.

i will try winipcfg and read a little more into my linux/samba book.

neither box is connected to the net.
