shorting seems like an extremely dangerous gamble.

You could be right, Id. However, when I looked at this market last week, I saw nothing out there to drive it up, and everything out there to drive it down. I won't let a position take me over a cliff, but I think I am OK for now.

I am trying to take small bites, and CYA.

In light of the economy, the time of the year, and the uncertainty related to the horrific events on 9/11 and the reactions they will provoke, I'd be more scared of writing puts than shorting qqq, not that I'm recommending or intending to do either.
