I thought the story was amusing.

I didn't--both because the issues involved are so serious, and because sound judgments (practical, moral, whatever) depend on accurate information.

Is the basic issue--whether some Palestinians cheered the attacks--major? not really, no. But it does say something about something, and deserves to be handled accurately. The evolution of the story, furthermore, is an interesting example of spin and counterspin.

The first step was the actual event and its coverage, which appears to have been legit.

The second step was an attempt to discredit that coverage, through a combination of honest skepticism and kneejerk antiamericanism/antizionism.

The third step was the rebuttal of the rebuttals, which the first half of your story involved.

The fourth step was a second attempt to discredit the coverage, apparently through deliberate disinformation--the second half of your story.

The fifth step was the reassertion of the original story, along with reports about the attempts to coerce the media into suppressing it and related ones. That was the substance of the Times article I posted in response.
