Petz: I am exceptionally impressed with the SiS 735 used in my new ECS K7S5A. I had some initial SCSI booting problems until I flashed to the latest BIOS, but this is an incredibly fast $69 motherboard. The LAN frees up an extra PCI slot. This board + an MX400 would probably beat any nVidia board in performance.

My brother is looking to buy a new computer and this is exactly what I will recommend.

I honestly believe SiS should hook up with STMicro and get an integrated Kyro2 working. Due to the much more efficient architecture of the Kyro2 (over GeForce), the performance of the integrated solution would be very close to what the stand-alone Kyro2 card offers. And since the two companies don't really compete and both have their own fabs, they might be some good synergies wrt process technology.

SiS is actually scheduled to come out with an integrated graphics solution for both P4 and Athlon (the P4 version has just been announced, with the other expected to follow in a month or two). Does anyone know what the graphics performance of the SiS chip is like?

EDIT: Actually, to continue the fairy-tale alliance above, SiS and STMicro could hook up with Creative for some sound, since the latter has completely stopped making graphics boards (IIRC, they might still be selling a few remarked MSI boards, but none of their own).
