Yep, can't wait for this press conference...

>>Joe's press conference - highlights

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1) Team didn't play that bad when you watch it four times on tape. Couple guys out of position, a few breaks here and there and it could've been different...

2) Defensive Line and especially Linebackers played well. Secondary missed assignments allowing the runners to much open space.

3) Punting team bothers him, we should have been able to block at least one Saturday. That would've made a difference

4) Tim Johnson's 100% has been practicing for two weeks. Good strong kid gotta work himself into football shape by playing. No he won't play him. Would rather be a week late, than a year early.

5) Jay called the touchdown pass play. Didn't see where Fran wa on that play.

6) Linebackers are not a concern. They'll be alright. Gotta get Williams to think less and react. I gotta get Graham to eat less. Sure I'd like to see him at 230, but he's not anywhere near that now. Hell if he would get down to 200 he could pay CB. Can't understand the fuss about Benfatti he thought number 37 ran well to the ball and showed some emotions.
He #37 looked faster and taller than I remember. Capone should be a good one. He has his red shirt out of the way already, once we throw away his soph year he should be ready to contribute.

7) Felder's gonna play better. Talked to him this morning. Wasn't him...
Schmidt pulled that guy down from the back. I apologized to Gus and everythings alright. Lenda's looking better I think he got bump up early on. No I am not putting Davis in front of Rush on the Depth Charts. Rush is my number 2 guy at that position. Yes, I can see both him and Reed playing. When, I 'm not going to get into that stuff here.

8) Thought Tony Johnson did a good job on punt coverage. That guy can be a linebacker. Doesn't know what happened to Larry Johnson and kickoff returns. We gotta get him the ball on those kick-offs. he should be out there. don't know what happened

9) McCoo played great, but Easy has the look. Best looking running back he's ever seen. Big and strong.

10) Sure he's concerned at QB. Sennaca will be alright though. Big Tough kid. All he'll say is "he could be a linebacker" great praise.

11) no, no the talent level at PSU is not the problem. When I look down the bench, I know that theory is wrong.

12) Doesn't care if he ever gets the record. "I don't care if I ever win another game!" joe said repeatedly. <<

Joe acting very wierd. He's saying a lot of blantantly f'd up things...but he's suggested many times how upset he is and how he hates losing and that things are going to change.

He was fidgety. Very uptight and not his usual calm self.

This is the real press conference....not much difference, eh? -g-

>>Joe Paterno press conference recap

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Which new players will enter the lineup depends on who practices well. Joe doesn't want to take anything away from the opponents PSU has played, but he's obviously not pleased with the way PSU is playing. Monday's not a tough day of practice. Tuesday and Wednesday will determine what happens.

2. Joe doesn't think the team is lacking talent. Leadership and character are lacking on this team. It's not a reflection of poor recruiting. We have enough football players. We have good young players, but we have to play more intelligently and confidently than we have against Miami and Wisconsin. Some of the good players may be too young to have an impact on what they want to do. Some of the older players may not have developed the way the staff would have liked.

3. Ron Christ asked why there weren't many short passes to combat the blitz. Joe said they didn't get blitzed that much. There were just breakdowns along the line. Joe's never been involved in a game where his offense has faced so many 3rd and 20s or offensive pass interference calls. Joe said the clip called on the screen pass was a blown call, but you're going to have those things. We have to control down and distance situations better. We will have a spark in the offense when people start making plays and build some confidence. On defense, we have to stop 3rd downs to give the ball back to the offense.

4. Joe's view of Matt Senneca having to lead this team hasn't changed.

5. Joe addressed the squad yesterday about everyone having to get better and being committed to the team. The media talked to some of the players and got the indication that people had some problems with the way thigns were being done. Joe thinks those players may not know what they're talking about.

6. Regarding the option, PSU didn't use it with Rashard Casey because Casey wasn't really a good runner. He was an elusive runner. Senneca has a bigger frame and can break tackles.

7. Iowa is a very good football team. They may be the conference sleeper. They haven't been challenged yet this year, but you can tell they're well coached and will be a tough opponent.

8. Joe hasn't thought much about anything besides getting his team better. They have to practice better and realize what a big game this is.

9. Joe is comfortable with playing Matt Senneca, Zack Mills, and Michael Robinson. The QBs haven't had any luck the first 2 games. Who do you blame when receivers drop passes or you get a big play called back on a penalty? Not the QB. Joe doesn't know how much pt any of the QBs will get against Iowa.

10. Once Ransom went down, they were forced to play Scott Davis who hadn't played much and they had problems controlling Bryant. They're obviously having problems with pass protection. However, he believes the OL is better than it was last year.

11. Iowa has good speed, 2 good QBs, a fine TB, and a sound defense. They match up well against PSU tactically and physically. Kirk Ferentz did a good job of showing patience last year and sticking with some kids when they were losing who became good football players.

12. Eric McCoo and Larry Johnson need to get the ball more often. McCoo has made plays when he's been in there and it may have been a mistake not to play him more.

13. A lot of PSU's defensive problems stemmed from poor tackling. They did well on run downs, but had lots of problems on 3rd downs. Joe's not happy with the play of the OLBs, but you can't single them out because no one has played well enough.

14. Positives from the Wisconsin game - David Royer, the team didn't quit

15. Joe has looked at the job he is doing, but is not losing confidence in his abilities. The team just has to play better and he is excited about the challenge of getting this team better. Joe said he is angry right now(he refused to use the p word he said).

16. The long layoff didn't help PSU since we had only played 1 game to Wisconsin's 3. It may not affect Iowa as much because they're already a confident team and have had some success this season.

17. Kirk Ferentz is a good, solid football coach. You could see Iowa's improvement as the year went on with game films. The Hawkeyes are a legitimate contender for the conference title.

18. Ransom is probably out this week. His arm is still in a sling. No new injuries

19. The scary thing is that the offense has less things to execute than at any time in Joe's tenure at PSU. You have to make sure that the game plan is simple enough that the backups can handle things if they get in there.

20. Scott Davis is ahead of Charles Rush, despite what the depth chart says.

21. Joe's close to deciding which freshmen will redshirt this year but won't disclose who.

22. Starting jobs are definitely up for grabs this week. There will also be competition for playing time beyond the starters.

23. Last year, the big problem was injuries along the OL. Joe thinks the OL this year is stronger. He's reluctant to be too critical of anybody because Wisconsin played a heck of a football game. Maybe we're playing as well as we can, he doesn't know.(ROFLMAO!)

24. Joe still likes the squad. Some of the players may think there's a lack of commitment from some people, but Joe says they worked very hard this year and he sees commitment. PSU was not a bad football team on Saturday, they just weren't good enough to beat Wisconsin. It disturbs him that the team didn't play well enough to win, but the year is still young and things can be turned around.

25. Joe doesn't think the team has lost the knowledge of how to win. A lot of things have happened to this team the past 2 years that make you question your ability to win. If you let it affect you, then the ability to win can disappear in a heartbeat.

26. There's no extra weight being placed on this game. Every game is a big game for PSU. We have to get better each week. The only thing Joe has control over is making sure the team is better this week than they were last week. He can't control people dropping passes, the other team playing well against PSU, bad calls by the officials, etc.

27. The thing that's making him so angry right now is losing. He hates to lose. He doesn't know how much anger the players have. When Joe accepts a loss, then you can start writing about his retirement because he'll be done. He's nowhere near accepting losing.<<
