The simple part of the concept is that old growth trees are different than regrowth trees. It is useful from an ecological point to preserve these differences as most creatures have evolved in proximity to old growth forest, not regrowth.

You don't honestly think your going to teach that know it all anything, do you? I found it quite interesting myself though since I have 80 acres of forest, both hard and soft along with creek and marsh.
