John,

<<I guess I don't really care how the conclusion is drawn if we agree, BMD is a necessity>>

I can agree only if we limit ourselves to R&D and not deployment, to be clear. And only if we are going to keep the missilemen around to support current strategic thinking. It's possible after all, we could develop new, more effective, global strategies that wouldn't need their special touch.

It might be possible to farm out the R&D to the rocketmen (devolving into earth orbit insertion specialists, really) and the satellite designers and engineers while, over time, we process this new tri-frontal dual objective global war campaign with sneaky pete war fighters and anything else we can throw at them.

Let's get our priorities straight. The question becomes: Do we phase out the missilemen, or what?

If this theatlantic.com is our real future, the missilemen must go because there's nothing they can contribute that will confront that threat. A threat more real and profound than any rogue missile scenario, however plausible.
