Having a bullet pierce the skin of a plane and blow it up is preferable to having the plane crashed into an important facility. The idea of arming the pilots to to insure that we won't need to use the guns. I have heard that three of the four pilots were service academy grads so they will know what to do with the guns - they won't need a lot of training.

I have heard the comment regarding the risk of bullet holes in the skin and that they are dangerous before. I really don't know enough to comment on this.

It must be enough of an issue, since existing sky marshals use special ammunition. A lot depends on the altitude I guess. Easy to hit a fuel tank too.

<<Also heard an expert say that the fear of a bullet piercing the skin of a plane at altitude is over-rated. One bullet hole in the skin won't make the plane blow up.>>

4-5 years ago a plane lost a 4'x6' chunk out of the top. Landed safely.
