"With AMD reputedly stuffing the channel in late Q2"

Intel apparently did more of this in Q2. Sales for the P4 have never gotten above 50% of the projected amount, despite the stuffing. How many of these does Intel have in the warehouse?

"Red ink for as far as the mind can project."

Obviously your mind can't project much beyond this quarter.

"Micron shutting them off"

Of course, Micron still sells them. In fact, 2 of the 3 featured systems are AMD based. But you probably already knew that.

RE:"This has got to be the bleakest moment in AMD's history"

Much of this is not AMDs doing...they still make good chips.
The CXT core -late mask thing and maybe the late were worse technically but overall, economy taken into account. You could be right.

When will Intel layoff?

Jim

> Is it possible AMD isn't shipping any product at this
> time?

This is not even remotely possible.

> ASPs crashing...

Well, that's just because AMD can't market. I can't really counter you here. <g>

> Fabs closing...

This is perhaps ominous, but the closing of these fabs will allegedly save AMD a good deal more money than they would gain in revenue from them. In bad economic times, sometimes tech companies have to do these things.

> Layoffs...

As much as I truly, truly hate layoffs, I will note that AMD is not the only company in the world that has reduced their headcount this year. As a matter of fact, AMD was able to withstand having to do this for far longer than many, many other tech sector companies.

> No .13u

Did AMD die when they trailed Intel's 180nm process by as many months? Of course not. AMD historically starts later and finishes earlier their process technology transitions in comparison to Intel.

> Frequency topped out.

[sarcasm] Yes, considering that AMD will be increasing their current product line's clock frequency by ten percent in a few weeks is an obvious sign that they will never reach higher than the current 1.40GHz.[/sarcasm]

> Second rate performance and falling farther behind.

Currently, AMD is a speed grade behind, roughly. In a few weeks, they will be even with Intel, assuming that Intel does not surprise with an early introduction of the 2.20GHz P4.

> No SMP design wins.

This is incorrect. The number of vendors shipping systems with the 760MP chipset is nonzero.

> No customers or operating system for Hammer. (plus no
> Hammer),

Intel hasn't shipped McKinley yet. Ooh, we must panic and sell that stock, too!!

Get real, Elmer. This a stupid reason for calling harbingers. Products that don't exist yet shouldn't be expected to be shipping.

> Red ink for as far as the mind can project...

At the current time, we know that AMD will post a loss next quarter. While this may continue, I think you are hopelessly exaggerating by saying that it's "as far as the mind can project". The mind can project "forever", and I sincerely doubt, as likely you do, that AMD will lose money every quarter until the end of time.

> This has got to be the bleakest moment in AMD's history.

Nonsense. AMD is in paradise right now compared to where they were in early 1999, when they were a billion dollars in debt. Now, they're at least half a billion dollars in cash. They're in a far better financial situation than they were back then, even though the economy sucks right now and didn't at that time. I don't harbor any illusions of AMD being in a strong position right now, but I'm finding you awfully prone to exaggeration in your comments here.
