John,
RE:"What happened? Had to be a little of Intel getting better and a lot of AMD getting worse."

You know the answer...
1. Lack of Mhz...the biggest...delays included, Palomino and Hammer. No plan to counter P4 high Mhz.
2. Lack of good chipset support.
3. The post-Y2K bust..
4. It's the economy stupid...

<it is amazing how fast AMD is imploding>

I'm sure if I went back and read my posts on AMD over the last year, I would probably jump off a bridge. I knew the direction they were headed in. Most of my posts were negative, with the caveat that I would hold some shares in case they ever buy a clue as to run a successful company ENTIRELY. It takes MUCH more to make a company successful than good product. AMD never got that.

<What happened>

Plus Jerry is egotistical and vindictive. Not a good combo for a CEO. I still contend that up until a few months ago, they could have been in sold-out situations, and continued to gain market share.

<Had to be a little of Intel getting better and a lot of AMD getting worse>

Intel didn't really get much better. AMD just got worse. Plus they continued to think Intel would just keep f*cking up.

I'd better not even re-read this post or I may pummel myself for holding this long.

My only saving grace this year is that I pulled a bunch of money out of the market to buy a house. That down payment in today's mkt wouldn't buy me a double-wide. Maybe a camper shell. Now if Phoenix real estate collapses I'm really up the creek.

Ack.

Dave

John: I don't want to beat a dying horse, but it is amazing how fast AMD is imploding. One year ago they were gaining share, making money, the darling of the analysts and the box makers.

One quarter ago they were "gaining share, making money, the darling of the analysts and the box makers."

What happened? Had to be a little of Intel getting better and a lot of AMD getting worse.

Intel certainly does have a more competitive product line-up now than it did 6 or 12 months ago. AMD has nothing that can beat the 2GHz P4 in overall performance. Even worse, the perception of performance by way of "MHz" is not exactly working in AMD's favor. And in the end, the perception of performance is all that counts.
