OT: I work in a place close to some EM radiation, so regular monitors flicker, I was given flat panel monitors (a couple of different brands). I noticed that my eye sight was worsening with these, so I chose to put up with the flicker and the regular monitors do seem to help reduce stress on my eyes - my eyes are not as red at the end of the day any more. However, your son would not be (shuld not be) staring at screens as long as I do and those flat panels do look cool and take less space. Just some rambling...

I've had 3ea 18.1" LCD screens for the last two years, and I love them... HP L1800s. Less desk space, lighter weight, instant on, no high energy type radiation.
They are now less than 1/2 the price they were when I bought, and will continue to drop in price... but what hasn't in the computer arena. These days, you purchase a good monitor, then select a good computer to go with it.
