gilbert - Unlike Eric I have lived in Quebec - and agree with you about people in Quebec City in particular.

I am just reporting what happened to me in the middle of Quebec city. I would speak in French and I would be answered in a grudging and surly manner in bad English. This gave the impression that I was not supposed to be speaking "their" language.

This actually only happened about three times, but it was definitely noticeable, since it did not happen anywhere else except, as I said, within a few blocks of the Chateau Frontenac.

I have lived two years in France altogether and spent many months in Paris. The Parisians can be brusque and rough (sometimes) but don't show that kind of defensiveness.
