I dont think we need a cabinet position for THAT but in light of the tragedy it is probably a welcome idea to console Americans. I think we have enough departments and thinking heads that can unify security where needed.

I think the appointee is a rather close freind of Bush.

Personally, I have always thought the FBI should have more of a presence throughout the country.

But, in light of the BILLIONS being spent now and at the snap of a finger, whats another few.

Lee--I have traveled quite a bit though never with El Al.
I can't say I haven't had contact with them though.
My last trip was to Europe and I was at the check-in of the airline next door. I had a minor ticket problem and was sent down to the check-in counter next to El Al's entrance. When I got close to El Al a woman with two men about six feet behind her intercepted me, "Can I help you?"
Mind you I was a good 25 to 30 feet from the area where El Al was. I was much closer to LTU and headed toward LTU when they came out to greet me.
She was courteous and certainly not threatening. However way they reacted did bring out some thoughts. El Al has not had a hijacking, the price though is this high level of preparedness (?), suspicion (?) paranoia (?). I can only assume it is more intense when one is actually flying with them.
A huge number of recognition systems are out there, including computer face recognition, iris, and Lord knows what all. Certainly they are going to want to apply this to an airline check-in. But talk is already about scanning city streets.
All the Best
