The Ghandi writings would be humorous in away, were they not followed by the deaths of 6 million Jews. Hopelessly naive is an understatement. And surprisingly racist, too.

Why should they not, like other peoples of the earth, make that country their home where they are born and where they earn their livelihood?

Hitler provided the final answer to that question. Jews were not assured safety in lands in which they were always and forever to be viewed as foreign, no matter how much they assimilated. And no one was more assimilated than the average German Jew.

Palestine belongs to the Arabs in the same sense that England belongs to the English or France to the French. It is wrong and inhuman to impose the Jews on the Arabs.

Let's change the terms. "It is wrong and inhuman to impose the illegal Mexicans on the Americans." After all, many Mexicans are here illegally--we didn't invite them, and it has been proven that they take jobs from native American workers (thus forcing them into deeper poverty and despair). Sounds pretty racist if you plug in another ethnic group. Actually, it sounds pretty racist in the original.

I don't see why anyone had an obligation to reply to this racist drivel.

Thanks for the excerpt.

It shows me what I've always believed, that Ghandi had no answer for Hitler. His proposals about Jews standing up for themselves non-violently were a kind of sick joke even when he proposed them, in 1938. In light of what we know now, it's worse than absurd. BTW, did Ghandi ever talk about the Jews and Israel after 1945?

I also think that Ghandi was badly misinformed wrt regard to the Jews "despoiling" the Arabs. The Jews didn't despoil the Arabs; they bought land at high prices and hired Arabs at good jobs they wouldn't have had otherwise. There are many examples of local Arabs going to work for the Jews and hiring someone else to farm their land due to the higher wages they got from the Jews. The British just tried to keep the peace, usually by appeassing the most unreasonable of the Arabs.

Remember, the Muslim population of Western Palestine went up five-fold between 1880 and 1948. Whatever this is, it wasn't displacement or despoilment.
