We supported some people who eventually joined the Taliban and we gave humanitarian aid to the Taliban but we didn't directly aid the Taliban with weapons or military training. They became powerful well after the Russians pulled out and out military support stopped. The various groups that fought the Russians started to fight each other and eventually the Taliban (who where not a significant force when the Russians where in Afghanistan) picked up the pieces.
