We could have punished China more economically.

We didn't have much trade with China in the 50s. This was during the cold war and around the time of the Korean War. (was that punishing China enough? Enormous numbers of Chinese soldiers died in Korea).

We could have decided not to open up to China decades later when Nixon visited, or decades after that when we let them in to world trade agreements. I'm not sure that stopping either opening would have been good policy but it was at least possible. In your opinion if a country takes over another country or area, how long should we wait to trade with them so that we can punish them? Are several decades enough or should we wait for a couple of centuries?
