I must admit that I agree with much of what you said.

I'm sure it was painful... :0)

Btw, please bear in mind that Israel CONTINUES to face massive inflows of foreign Jews seeking some haven, whether economic, or political, from their former countries of residence.

Many of these individuals are coming from the former Soviet Union, and the government has to find a place where they can live. And the majority of these settlements have been built upon land where the Israel government deemed it a security interest to maintain a presence, namely the mountainous area running N/S along the Jordan River, in order to create secure "islands" which could control routes into the west bank from Jordan, as well as providing strongholds from which to delay or defeat invading armies. Additionally, Israel depends upon these hills as locations to emplace their radar facilities so that they can project their radar coverage well into Jordan, and Iraq.

Additionally, while THERE ARE settlements in the West Bank, they are no longer being expanded in terms of territory. In fact, Palestinians HOWL whenever Jews living in these settlements want to VERTICALLY develop the already established settlements (multi-level apartments.. etc). That's like telling me that I can add an addition onto my house, even if it falls within my established property line, or amounts to adding a second story.

And in fact, Barak proposed dismantling settlements that would have forced 40,000 Jews off their land in order to convince Arafat to sign a peace treaty.. But Arafat balked and demanded all settlements be dismantled, WHICH JUST ISN'T EVER GOING TO HAPPEN.

The issue that Palestinians need to come to grips with is creating a political and economic state that is tolerant of Jewish habitation on the West Bank, just as Israel has integrated its Arab population.

If their "goal" in creating a Palestinian state is the expulsion of every non-Palestinian from the Palestinian Authority and the west bank, then anyone who is complicit in such an arrangement will bear the responsibility for creating a far more "purist" and intolerant state than they claim that Israel represents.
