If I was the manger of the Van Eck fund, I'd do something really underhanded now.

I'd take my cash and buy shares in other fully invested gold funds. This would have the effect of getting the Van Eck fund fully invested and diluting the current share holders of those funds. The current fund share holders would see their % investment in gold shares skew towards cash which would have been received from Van Eck. Their % owenership of the funds gold shares would go down. But as the manager of the Van Eck fund, I'd say, "So what?"
