I just read something making a similar argument... our dark ages was their golden age - as the west has become pre-eminent they have fallen etc... cultural jealousy. There is no question they envy our success as much as they hate our decadence... but what the fundamentalists hate the most is truly representative government. Look at Iran - the more real votes they have the more violent the mullahs and fanatics become... the real challenge for the moderates there is to move slow enough to prevent a violent backlash from Khameni's crowd. Funny that most of the Arab demonstrators would sell their first born child to live in America. Are they demonstrating about the rights of Palestinians or the wealth of Americans? IMO it's both but more of the latter. Anyone who thinks these scum would stop if the Palestinians were given a homeland, or even if Israel was dissolved, is crazy.
