correction of typo in last sentence of previous post:
I might have to conclude that due to historical precepts there's actually a much larger war about to be waged (or escalated upon existing precepts) than that which has been spoken of.

Another thought is that India would be the most key player in a wider conflict. Many people in this country couldn't tell a Hindu from a Sunni Muslim.
I've recently been spending some time to get exposure to Hindus and Muslims. Sheez...I've been putting 10 to 12 hrs per day into absorbing as much information as I can about the global, political, historical and economic aspects of the situation.
From what I've seen...
Probable cause #1) historically...there is still most definitely an ideological struggle between the proponents of what is called "modernity" and the proponents of the most literal forms of authoritarianism espoused in the most paranoid societies prior to the 1500's. I'm still searching for the name given to those mindsets. As far as today is concerned...it's been called radical Islamic fundamentalism. Whatever they called it back then...it was the "reason" for "The Crusades". The Crusades were not really the way to go about things but they were the first historical step in the conflict between modernity and inflexible oligarchal(sp?) unwillingness to accept societal advancement. That conflict is still in progress here.

Probable cause #2) Control of water in a region that intimately affects the availability of oil as a resource that the West has certainly committed itself to as a source of growth fuel.
Look at the rivers in the Middle East and Central Asia. Look at who controls those rivers. If you are among those who would rather see the values of Islam during the 1500s prevail...you're kinda pissed off that you control none of the water.

Probable cause #3...Oil. nah...Oil is well under the thumb of modernity.

Probable cause #4...Jihad...or whatever it's called. No way. It's obviously not Holy from the perspective of Islam. It's the damn Dark Ages still unresolved. Toss in a little technology and espionage experience borne out of the cold war with Probable cause #1 and you get big jets crashing into big buildings.

Modernity will win because its premise is to move forward while radical fundamentalism is inherently stagnant and most likely self-destructive in the long run. It does appear (read the word "appear" as it's intended here...) that uncertainty will have significant sway for some months at most but modernity has been winning for centuries so the trend is still completely intact even though there's been a slight fluctuation here.
