Pakistanis Believe Israel Is Behind Attacks on America By Mark McDonald, Knight Ridder Washington Bureau Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News Sep. 22--ISLAMABAD, Pakistan -- Pakistanis widely believe that Israel is behind the horrific attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, illustrating why the government here faces trouble winning public support for its backing of U.S. demands on Afghanistan. At Friday prayers, Muslim clerics preached three principal themes at the nation's mosques: They absolved suspected terrorist leader Osama bin Laden of any involvement in the terrorist strikes, they asked their followers to pray for the downtrodden people of Afghanistan, and they explicitly blamed Israel for masterminding the attacks. Mulana Abdul Aziz, in a sermon at the famed Red Mosque here, told an overflow crowd of worshippers it was well-known that 4,000 Jewish employees who normally worked at the World Trade Center were told to stay home on Sept. 11. "So why were all those 4,000 Jews absent from work that day?" asked Malik Talat, 45, the owner of a general store in the capital. "Israel is involved in this, no question at all. They want to create a worldwide war against Islam. It's a conspiracy." There is no evidence of such a warning and it's certain that hundreds of Jews died in the suicide attack. Still, the absent-from-work charge was repeated at other mosques in Islamabad and elsewhere in Pakistan, and it has been published in at least one Pakistani Urdu-language newspaper. Another version of the story -- related by a well-known Islamic cleric and teacher named Mulana Samiul Haq -- says that 4,000 Jewish workers were in the twin towers on the morning of the attacks but none of them were killed or injured. In interviews with dozens of Pakistanis from almost every level of society, it's apparent that many citizens, if not most, are convinced the Israelis are to blame for the attacks. One of those is Mohammed Zia, 37, a travel agent who has made a pilgrimage to Mecca. "It's the work of Jews, a conspiracy of the Jews against Christians and Muslims," Zia said. "They want Christians and Muslims to fight each other." Some clerics also preached Friday that Mossad, the Israeli intelligence service, orchestrated the attacks in order to turn U.S. public opinion against Muslims and Islam. Mossad, they said, is the only group in the world skilled enough to have pulled off the hijackings. "Osama has not such great resources as Israel," said Mahmood ul-Hassan, 31, a government worker sporting a Boston Red Sox baseball cap. "He's obviously not involved in this case. It's a conspiracy by the Jews against America." FACTBOX-Hundreds of non-Americans among trade center missing NEW YORK, Sept 21 (Reuters) - New York City has long drawn people from all over the world.
