More OT, RE: So, where did the money go? Other investment vehicles? Bonds?

Well, gold has appreciated about 10%, some went there. Short term treasuries have appreciated sharply, some probably went there.

In the end, though, I bet a lot goes to finance the deficit that our government has got to be running right now.

Sure, but the cost of components become more expensive to produce in the face of a weaker dollar, right, so it's a wash?

It doesn't have to be, according to the weaker dollar proponents. If a company has a dollar base for all costs, then sells a product in euros, a weaker dollar would enable them to sell a product for fewer euros and still realize the same dollars in sales. And in a vacuum, this makes sense.

Alas, our economy doesn't operate in a vacuum. Robert Rubin was perhaps one of the finest government officials we've ever had. And he realized that the twin goals of a strong dollar and a balanced budget were the keys to a solid economy. I worry that without Rubin around, we won't be so strident in trying to keep those goals.

If OPEC doesn't have control over gas prices, then why would Saudi Arabia business people be upset at America's supposed-influence in keeping prices low on OPEC?

Hey, you gotta blame someone, right?

I don't think that Enron and Duke Energy had anything to do with the sharp rise in natural gas prices last winter, either, but that didn't stop people from being upset at them.
