The Independent is one of the most intelligent broadsheets, IMO. Founded as a reaction against the takeover of the Times by Murdoch, mainly... has a good mix of columnists and excellent foreign coverage, especially now. Robert Fisk's articles are excellent, so long as you're not a great admirer of Ariel Sharon... I think Fisk covered the Sabra Camp massacres which Sharon allowed/encouraged in '82. I'll try not to blank the board too much, though :)
