Excellent post.

Bottom line; the world, and we, must not fall into the trap of thinking that we are held financially and militarily responsible for the entire world's prosperity and democracy. Like a psychiatrist would say about other forelorn countries, "you can change, but you have to want to change".

We're limited to helping by example and by voluntary programs but can neither afford nor tolerate violent exchange except in self-defense. Neither can other ideologies, witness the discredited "Domino Theory" failing miserably.

As the author says, to do otherwise opens us up to scapegoating by failing regimes, which escalates into the kind of attacks we saw this month.

What is it that compels us to get militarily involved in other people's struggles?

It is a lack of voter involvement, and an excess of political zeal by self-important pundits and politicians eager for "action". Let them join the Peace Corps, or Delta Force if they want action. Get the bastards out of office, fast, before they send another $43 million to the Taleban to come back here and blow us out of the skies or poison us.

Maybe now we'll have voter involvement...
