Damaging Intel is AMD's only purpose as long as Jerry stays at the helm. Not profits (except to fund more attacks on Intel), not shareholder value, nothing but Jerry's singleminded hatred of Intel

Having a common, named, enemy is a very effective way to rally and focus the troops and getting things done. Jerry's use of Intel is actually very, very, clever. If he hadn't done that, the company would have disintegrated completely a long while ago.

Consider the situation right now - don't you think there are a 100 different voices inside of AMD suggesting how to fix the company right now? I bet there is some thinking that they should focus on chips used in higher growth industries like flat-panel displays; I bet there are some that want to get rid of flash altogether; I bet there are some that want to get rid of processors altogether; some want to sell the company, others want to acquire. These are all very sharp, intelligent people, with well thought out plans. Someone in Jerry's (or any CEO's) position has to galvanize and focus these sharp, independant, thinkers.

Consider Microsoft - it is no coincidence that they have a reputation for "copying" others' innovations. This is because what they are good at is identifying an enemy, then focusing on them. Whether its WordPerfect, or Lotus, or Novell, or Oracle.
