your application of those skills and talents in 'probing for the truth(?) to this message board appear to do nothing more than agitate 'both sides' on any issue because your 'questions' place all on the defensive.

My objectives here are quite simple. My primary one is to increase my understanding of the world. If you recall the hierarchy of values I posted on the KK thread, you would find wisdom at the top of my list. This can be a very useful and convenient place to develop an understanding of those with very different experiences and points of view. To the extent that the wisdom of others posting here is increased either directly or indirectly by my participation, all the better. I don't have any particular interest in truth, only understanding.

My second objective revolves around keeping this thread of suitable quality for me to achieve objective number one. That's why I try to model thoughtful, civil discussion and why I occasionally take on a thread nanny role. I'd also hope that the general ability of the populace at large to discuss constructively would be improved so I occasionally pitch analytic rigor, active listening, tolerance, mutual respect, etc.

When I ask a question, I'm engaging in dialogue to flesh out my understanding of the subject. I never ask to agitate. I have not noticed that my questions had that result--I've been under the impression that my participation more often has a calming effect--but I shall be on the watch for it.
