I think Bob means that the customer would always think the dealer is ripping him off in this case (offering him $290 for a coin he just paid $399+shipping for), not that the Home Shopping show was the evil one.

That said, my favorite internet coin dealer tried to talk me into some Saint Gaudens gold pieces last time (pre 9/11). Can't blame him, based on the commission, but that's my point. "Nobody got spot price for Krugerrands when it spiked to $850, they got more for Saint Gaudens pieces", blah blah. My bet is that even if that were true, you'd have done much better percentagewise on the Krugerrands.

True, some coin dealer try to rip stuff from unsuspecting customers, and some even brag about it. I know one who bought a 50 piece commem half type set for a little over melt value (around $100) The coins were easily worth $10,000+ at the time.
