There is judgementalism inherent in those boxes that I think is a very very slippery slope.

Without boxes there is no understanding. How could we grasp the animal kingdom were there no species, families, phyla, etc.? It is singularly unhelpful to have to litter out thought processes with mallards and teals and mergansers when we can simply deal with a broad category like ducks.

I know that there are a lot of people around here who are allergic to boxes. The thread has discussed this before. I disagree that the judgmentalism is inherent in those boxes although I recognize that it is, unfortunately, a common adjunct to categorization. It is part of the maturation process to learn to analyze boxes without all the "mas macho" baggage. It's either that or stifle our intellectual progress.
