I think what we can be proud of is that we have had the means of mass-murder and not used them ...

I think the concept of mutual assured destruction had a little to do with it, but I agree on your main point - mass murder is mass murder, no matter the excuse. However, if we are to be judged by the sins of our ancestors, heaven will be quite an empty place.

>>My view is that mass murder is not something you want to get busy justifying -- no matter what ends you seek, it is still mass murder and there is nothing holy or noble or righteous about it. And it cuts both ways -- we cannot say that we only engage in mass murder when we have a darn good reason -- everybody always says they have a darn good reason, and it just makes you a less-than honorable person.<<

gst, i totally agree. history has shown all who will see that sane, rational folks will permit heinous evil... it just has to be "justified" some how.

evil is evil. good is good. the WHO doesn't matter. if we go and wholesale slaughter thousands of arab civilians then we are terrorists, too, imho. killing civilians is killing civilians (even if they hate the US). if we go in and nail the ratb*s behind this bombing then we are doing a good thing.

we don't want to allow evil to transform us into evil. it surely wants to.

>> I think what we can be proud of is that we have had the means of mass-murder and not used them -- that is such an extraordinary accomplishment, and for that we should be very, very proud indeed. That is what makes us "right". And that is why we will win. <<

i hope so, but unfortunately i don't think the american people have a clue as to what's in store for us. who knows how rationally we'll be when more terrorist attacks occur. we might be so angered and so scared that we won't mind resorting to extreme measures.

will we start rounding up arabs here in the u.s. like we did the japanese during WWII? i see this as a distinct possibility.
