OT re air travel: I was expecting to hear something like what I've been hearing, but not the degree. I'm *slightly* reluctant to use air travel right now, not because I have the slightest concern about being hijacked, but because I'm not too interested in going through an hour of security to get on the plane, not being able to park in the airport, and so forth. It's just too much of a hassle.

But the number of people who are afraid to fly because they think they're going to be hijacked is truly amazing, based on my admittedly unscientific sample of conversations. Anybody who was even slightly phobic about flying is now terrified of it. Even a lot of people who were in the center of the flying-phobia bell curve are now a little afraid. They entertain the possibility that the next flight they board is going to get hijacked by Osama Bin Laden with probability greater than 0.000000000000001, not realizing that they're far more likely to get hit by a bus while crossing the street.

Underscores the effectiveness of terrorism.
