I think the "difference" is when you advocating long positions you are supporting "growth", when you are shorting you are betting on "contraction".

I'm not saying I agree or disagree with this, but my take is that during a "war" situation, it appears that shorting is taking advantage of an already calamitous situation, further exacerbating it by weakening stock prices.
