It was rooted in a actual very real threat, as history has proven. The execution was political paranoia through an alchohol haze.

Joe McCarthy conducted a witch-hunt, rooted in political paranoia, against left-leaning U.S. citizens in the 1950s.

Seems to me that McCarthy and Cohen shoulda been considered for that treatment for "murdering" vast numbers of peoples lives and reputations. We all must remember these points in time, for we are at another such point now.
