I'm just responding to all the nonsense/urban-myth accounts of Islam that now circulating around on SI and elsewhere. Like all the urban-myth Nostradamus Quatrains. People should not believe everything they read... (that goes for religious believers, media-consumers etc. as well).

I think discussion of culture and economic development (that many think is politically incorrect) is a valid discussion. But again all the counter-cases should be examined. Religions are dimensions of cultures that are common to large groups - ethnic groups, whole societies etc. I don't think we should just say "religion is personal and irrelevant to studying economics or history". The belief that religion is a personal thing is an aspect of secular Western culture. On the other hand ideology often works to serve the purposes desired.

For example, I don't think that ancient Jewish culture for example was particularly pro or anti-environment compared to other cultures of the time. Later capitalists maybe found it convenient to cite some biblical verses for their purposes. Then along come environmentalists and slam the "Judeo-Christian Tradition" for encouraging over-exploitation.
