I was late to the debate and actually was totally off base.

Germany ? I can't say as I don't know but I would have thought Germany got a taste though from reunification ?

No need to differ, I think you are right about the US. Part of the difference between Canada and the US is exactly what you say. Up here we have less poverty or a higher threshold (you're poor at a higher income level). We do have though an increasing problem with child poverty due to young single mothers but I don't want to go down that avenue.

I used to travel a lot for business when I started out in Toronto, to the Carolinas, and Georgia and remember seeing what looked almost like shanty towns in the countryside and tobacco country. The only place I've seen similar in Canada are some native communities and that was quite a while ago. If you turn back the clock however even as recently as the 60's the conditions of the French in New Brunswick were still pretty severe also.
