The difference between "burglary" and "robbery" is that I'm not in the house at the time the possibly-armed intruder is there. In fact, I know from first-hand experience that it can take a half-hour even when you've told them you've actually caught the guy. Next time I might not be twice his size, and he might be armed.

As for fireworks, many builders nail kindling to the top of the house when they're done. They call it a "shake" roof and claim that it's pretty. One ember on one of those roofs and your house is gone in a half-hour. The houses of your immediate neighbors tend to ignite about fifteen minutes after yours does -- that's roughly how long it takes for fire to spread far enough outward that the embers can make the ten-foot jump from one roof to the other. Next time the first bottle rocket might be a bull's-eye.

And no, there's no accountability whatsoever. They might as well just put an answering machine on their phone with "We're unusually busy right now" as the message, because that's the inarguable excuse you get in San Jose any time of the day or night, any day of the week, any time of the year.

If we had decent police protection, then I think a lot of the "gun nuts" wouldn't feel the need to face the world on their own.
